Wednesday, May 31, 2017 | Week 7 - 8

Hello from the field (finally) everyone!

It's been a while since I've emailed. There's a lot to say and not much time to say it. I may as well start from the top though. Sunday, the 21st we said goodbye to our zone at the MTC and left the next morning (at 3:30am) for the SLC airport.

We first flew from SLC to Denver, then on to Lubbock, Texas, arriving mid-day.

ABOVE: Welcome to Lubbock!! 5 other missionaries flew with Elder Graf and I, also going to the Lubbock, TX Mission (the TLM). Elder Graf and I were the only ones who were Spanish-speaking.

ABOVE: President and Sister Heap, along with all those who arrived that day. Upon arriving, we go to the Lubbock Temple for a quick picture.

We had instructions and orientation the rest of the day and the next morning, until we headed off to our areas on Tuesday afternoon. My first area is in Portales, New Mexico!

ABOVE: President Heap, on the left.

ABOVE: More orientation with President Heap and Assistants in the back along the railing (at the mission home).

BELOW: Those in for transfers, new arrivals like me, and missionaries coming in to go home the next day.

BELOW: My MTC companion. He's heading off to Carlsbad, NM, about 2 1/2 hours South/Southwest of me.

ABOVE: This is our Portales District. It takes in Clovis, NM also. Our Spanish Branch meets in the Portales Ward building. The New Mexico/Texas border is just to the east of us about 20 miles.

BELOW: Our Portales District. 6 Elders, 2 Sisters. We have a car!!

BELOW: My trainer is Elder McMaster. He's been out for about 6 to 7 months and he's my trainer. He also went to the Provo MTC, Spanish-speaking. He's from Cottonwood Heights, Utah.

My district is pretty awesome. I've become good friends with everyone already. Some of us got to wash firetrucks on Saturday as a community service, which was pretty sweet. The insides of the trucks are very interesting. Apparently, the past Elders here have been doing it for a while on a regular basis.

BELOW: Elder Zeagler and I. He is one of our District Leaders that live in Portales also (English-speaking). Elder McMaster and I are the only Spanish-speaking in Portales. Up in Clovis, NM, just north of us, there is one Spanish-speaking Sister with an English-speaking companion. (Notice the TLM we sprayed with window cleaner on the windshield)

Elder McMaster and I attend a Spanish branch here in Portales and man, it's tiny! There's only like 6 or 7 different families. We intend to increase that number. :-)  We actually were both asked to speak during Sacrament meeting and we did, all in Spanish. It was about a 10 minute talk, only because I spoke so slowly because mi Español no es bueno. Luckily, our Branch president is pretty cool and also speaks English, so I'm not clueless all the time, haha. Sunday school and Elder's quorum went over my head completely. I could barely tell where the lessons were going. Oh well, I'll get there with time, haha.

On Memorial Day, Monday, we got to run in a 5k fun run in Lubbock! It was called the "Conquer Hunger Run" where people bring/donate food for a food shelter. They do it every year and the missionaries have participated in the last couple years. All the Elders in our zone, as well as the assistants and our mission president and his wife ran it...all in white shirts and ties! Everyone did very well. I did...alright, I guess, haha. I ran it in almost exactly 30 minutes. It was a fun day! Though running a 5k dressed in a shirt and tie in hot Texas sun is probably something I'll never care to experience ever again, haha. Thank goodness we were allowed to wear shorts and tennis shoes!

BELOW: Me and Elder Taylor from our Zone. Some other missionaries wanted to see who was taller.

BELOW: Everyone who ran from our Zone and the mission office.

Yesterday (Tuesday), we had helped Elder Field and Elder Zeagler, our district leaders, who also live in Portales, move out of a horrible home they had been living in and into a nicer apartment. It took basically all day until like 6pm, which is the time the library closes. The library was closed Monday, of course, because of Memorial Day, and so our P-day  was moved to Tuesday, and because of the move, we didn't have time to email yesterday, so here we are emailing two days after P-Day. As you probably know, my P-Day is normally Monday, so if everything goes well, you'll all hear from me again next Monday

As for the actual missionary work, things have been a tad slow. Lots of appointments falling through or people that we struggle to keep in contact with. Contacting hasn't been too successful either, but we've got a few potential investigators out of it. It's obviously difficult but things are still good.

I am loving my time out here and I'm learning a lot. I wish I had more time to email each and every one of you, but time is much more limited for email in the field than the MTC, where we were allowed to check our email daily, but not respond. Out in the field, I can't read emails except for on Mondays, so half my time is reading through them all - WHICH IS GREAT!! Don't get me wrong...just saying it takes a bit more time than in the MTC.

I love you all and hope everyone is doing well! Keep sending photos! I love seeing and hearing how things are going for everyone.

Until Monday!...hopefully!

Elder Lewis

BTW... my address is:
1901  S. Ave H, Apt. I
Portales, NM  88130

(If you look up the address on Google Maps, the pin doesn't exactly match where we're at, which is a little south of the pin and on the right in a complex of 12 duplexes in 6 single story buildings. We walk to the church because it's just southeast of us on the same block. We just cut through the field and a dirt road. The Google Maps picture looks brown and ugly because it was obviously Winter time.

Saturday, May 20, 2017 | Final MTC - Week 6

Hello everyone!

I hope everyone is doing well! Today is my last P-Day in the MTC and the idea of leaving this place that I've gotten so used to over the last month is strange. My next email will be in Texas! It's gonna be a crazy week.

Last Sunday was Mother's Day so I got to call home from a computer lab in the MTC here and talk a bit. It was a lot of fun hearing from family again.

This week consisted of learning the final Spanish grammar principles and I can say that I am thoroughly confused haha. As I've attempted to apply these principles while talking it seems that my Spanish actually got worse hahahah.

Yesterday we had in-field orientation which lasted like all day and there were lots of presentations. Towards the end of the orientation was a pretty cheesy but funny play put on by some teachers and a few missionary volunteers.

I am so thankful to everyone who has helped me get here! The MTC is a great place and I am excited to finally go out and start teaching people and help bring the gospel into their lives. This is gonna be so difficult but I can't wait to learn and grow and because the best missionary I can be. I know this is Christ's true gospel, and because of it we are able to know the truth and be able to return to Him and our Heavenly Father again.

If anyone has any questions or needs information about addresses or has problems with viewing photos or anything, please let me or my parents know. Thanks again everyone! I love you all!

See ya'll in the field!

The power went out throughout the entire MTC!

And just for fun....

Saturday, May 13, 2017 | Week 5

Hello!

I hope everyone is doing well. Things are still great here. Since I've been in a daily and weekly routine, time has been really flying. I'll be heading out into the field on Monday, May 22! I got my flight plan yesterday and will have to be to the MTC travel office at 3:30am, and I should be in Lubbock, TX around 12:25pm.

By the way, anyone in Provo have any idea what the deal was with the fireworks Thursday night?

My Spanish is getting better. I can comprehend most of what our teachers are saying though I still can't give a response that isn't littered with grammatical errors haha. But at least I can get my point across...sometimes. Any time I hear native speakers talk as fast as they normally do, I don't understand any of it, so I'm interested to see how long it will take me to get to that point with native speakers.

We've had lots of people come into the zone the past few weeks. Two new districts! I'm trying to get some pictures of everyone. I'll hopefully get them all in on next weeks email. I can't imagine the MTC in the middle of the summer. This place already seems super busy and it's one of the slowest times of the year.

The investigator lessons have been going so much better. I can better communicate and I know better how a lesson should be taught, and it not just be a lecture. I look forward to teaching real investigators and share this gospel with them.

Thank you everyone for all the emails, once again. Just remember you can send the emails any time and I'll be able to read them during the week, I just won't be able to respond until P-Day. I look forward to hearing from all of you over the course of my mission. I love you all!

Elder Lewis

P.S. If there are any problems with photos or videos on the email, you can also all go to elderjaredlewis.blogspot.com where the photos and videos will also be.

Saturday, May 6, 2017 | Week 4

Buenos días!

Another busy and fun week at the MTC. Monday, the senior half of our zone departed into the field! Good luck to all of them, they will be missed. They've all become good friends.

Top left to bottom right, highlighted in red are those who left monday, blue left first Monday I was here - Elders: MooreSimmons, Whittacre, Bertuccini, Merrill, Clymer, MarksQuinn, Christensen, Me, Graf, Sisters: NelsonBean, Hadley, Kentner, Elders: Moore, StarksMoran, Sisters: Walker,SolomonWorley, and Elder Jones.

More pictures of our zone:

Sunday we got new zone leaders, which are now Elder Merrill and Elder Bertuccini! We also got a new district in on Wednesday that I'll have to get a picture of all of us for next week.

Tuesday night's devotional - Elder Ronald A. Rasband came and spoke to us about following Spiritual promptings. During this devotional (which was broadcast to all MTC's), we got to perform "I'll Go Where You Want Me to Go" as a choir, but it was a MoTab version with like 8 parts. Luckily they simplified it down to just 4 and it still sounded amazing. Being in the choir is awesome.

With the other district leaving we got a lot of things called "pass-downs", which are items that are given to newer districts with everyone's names, who previously had it, written on it. These range from giant cans of corn to small toys or whatever. It's an interesting tradition.

On Monday we attempted an "English Fast" as a zone, and it didn't turn out well. Everyone basically decided to stop talking because no English was allowed and no one can really make good conversation in Spanish only. Everyone gave up before dinner haha.

Spanish is getting real deep into the complex grammar rules. I'm not completely stumped yet, but that's just because it's at the easy part (relatively speaking). I just need to improve my application of these grammar rules. Like, I'm pretty sure I never got as complex in grammar in English, as we will be getting into in Spanish by the end of my time here at the MTC. I am understanding a lot more now and can teach lessons and give talks all in Spanish too. It's pretty great.

The field opened up this week and to be honest it's pretty underwhelming. Sand volleyball is nice, but everything else just requires running outside in the hot sun. I think I'll stick to my in-door four-square haha.

I have a little over two weeks left and then I'm out of here. It's gonna be another strange adjustment I'm sure, but I'm eager to really start serving.

Thank you to everyone who has helped me out and sent me letters, photos, and packages! Thank you Holderness family for the package! I don't think I'll ever run out of junk food to eat back at my room. I'm loving all the letters and photos. Keep 'em coming! Hasta la próxima semana. ¡Los amo todo!
